FRANCESCA FLYNN. (b. 1990)

Francesca Flynn is an award winning artist and designer. Born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, she is now based in Glasgow. Working predominantly in the medium of clay, she creates bold figurative sculptures full of life from her home studio. Her sculptures depict female form, human emotions and the natural world.

Francesca studied at Glasgow School of Art (2008-2012), graduating with a First Class Honours Degree in Silversmithing and Jewellery Design, winning prestigious awards such as The Peter Wyllie Davidson Memorial Prize, and the Incorporation of Hammermen Prize. Work from her degree show was purchased for The Glasgow School of Art Archives, now part of the historic collection at The Whisky Bond Glasgow. Francesca received the Glasgow & West of Scotland Undergraduate scholarship for the full duration of her studies, which aimed to represent those from lower socio-economic areas. She credits this as a vital lifeline at the start of her creative career.

Following graduation, Francesca was selected as Artist in Residence at the Glasgow School of Art for one year, creating art jewellery for over a dozen exhibitions across the UK and abroad. She was then invited to a placement at a prestigious fine jewellery workshop in Hatton Garden, London and went on to work as a jewellery designer in the industry for almost a decade.

Now specialising in sculpture, Francesca's work encapsulates a sense of dreamlike wonder. The sea is a recurring symbol throughout. Each artwork is hand sculpted from an initial block of clay, which Francesca carves dynamically and carefully refines with creativity and natural instinct, often adding detail over many weeks. She then fires and glazes the work to her own distinct vision.

Francesca Flynn’s artwork features in national & international private collections. She welcomes a select number of commissions & exhibitions throughout the year. For more details email francesca@francescaflynn.com.
