EXHIBITION STATEMENT
A solo exhibition of sculpture, ‘An Ocean of Dreams’ by Francesca Flynn showcases a body of work exploring themes of the female form, human emotions and the natural world. Each artwork is hand sculpted from an initial block of stoneware clay, which Francesca carves and carefully refines with creativity and natural instinct, often adding detail over many weeks. She then fires and glazes the work to her own distinct vision. Francesca’s approach to sculpting is intuitive and spontaneous, expressing a thought or feeling which is often indescribable by words. To quote the artist, “When I am sitting with a block of clay, I feel a great sense of possibility. My mind becomes clear yet focused, and the work takes on a life of its own. With some sculptures, I have an initial idea and record this as a quick sketch. Others begin immediately in clay. As I sculpt and carve, features begin to emerge. It is incredibly exciting as the form takes shape and the work unfolds like magic.” The resulting sculptures inspire a sense of dreamlike wonder, evocative of sea myths and ancient legends.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Francesca Flynn is an award-winning artist and designer. Born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, Francesca is now based in Glasgow and creates bold figurative clay sculptures full of life from her home studio. Graduating with a First Class Honours Degree from Glasgow School of Art (2008-2012) in Jewellery Design, Francesca won several prestigious awards such as The Peter Wyllie Davidson Memorial Prize, and the Incorporation of Hammermen Prize.
For the duration of her studies, she received a scholarship which aimed at representing students from lower socio-economic areas and Francesca credits this as a vital lifeline at the start of her career. Now specialising in sculpture, her work encapsulates a sense of dreamlike wonder, and the sea is a recurring symbol throughout her work. Alongside making sculptures, Francesca teaches pottery classes at Creative Bloc, a community studio in Maryhill, Glasgow.
